Why Is It Hard To Listen To My Own Advice?

I like to give advice to people who are actually interested in hearing what I have to say. Not everyone uses the advice but it feels nice when someone actually considers it or actually uses it. Although Im not 100% sure if my advice is actually good or not, some people have told me they appreciate it. I don’t take for granted advice given from others. I am eager to know what input people have and this goes beyond just fitness. When someone gives me a word of advice or some tips and tricks I am motivated to give them a try even if originally I don’t agree with the advice. Yet when I give myself advice I don’t feel that same motivation to give it a try, Im not eager to actually listen to myself.

Maybe not taking my own advice is some sort of lack of confidence but personally I believe that Im just more interested in something new, something that I haven’t tried before. As a personal trainer I have trained clients which means giving programs specifically for their needs (another thing that excites me!). I am proud of these programs and what I’ve created but even more excited to see the results progress over time. Although I do this and am proud of this work I can’t get myself to follow a program created for myself. I don’t get the motivation to follow it and see myself veering off from it all too often. This is why I look and work with programs built from other people. When I get these programs, like I said earlier, I am so motivated to follow it to every last point, its the same excitement I get when I make programs for other people!

In a way this is relatively frustrating, why can’t I just find the same enjoyment through my own advice!! The frustration stems from the fact that when I program for myself I usually see very good results and sometimes even better than other programs that I follow. This is mainly because I am intuitively changing my programs to how I feel or what I am doing that week, whether it be travel, or something taxing on my body such as a sporting event. By doing this I can alter what I have planned for that day to keep progression building.

The fact of the matter is that I see why I can’t follow my own advice but in a large way it is frustrating to not be excited to use what I already know. Taking advice from other people is great and like I said it excites me, but sometimes it would just be much more efficient if I’d get the same feeling when I give myself the same advice.

If anyone else feels this way you aren’t alone!!

Also, speaking of programs Im looking for a straight forward powerlifting program to ramp up my workouts leading up to a potential powerlifting meet in August. If someone has any outlook on this let me know in the comments or shoot me an email!! (jeffreynagle@verizon.net) Thank you!!

Spread the love!
