I had someone years ago come in with the goal of losing 10 or 15 pounds. Very common goal, but I always ask for a secondary goal or even a shorter term goal to have something else to shoot for along the way.
As we know weight is not everything, it’s really not even close to the whole picture. There are a lot of things that have to happen on the way there.
So after a few months we saw some great results. Body fat was down, strength had increased, her body was moving great, she felt better, the only thing was that her weight hadn’t moved much. That hung on to her. She could not get over the fact that her weight was almost the same as before starting and It was discouraging.
I get It, you work your ass off for a few months and your #1 goal hasn’t moved at all.
A few more weeks go by and things start to slip behind a bit. Less consistent with workouts, sporadic with her food, and all around not feeling great about everything. Then she gets sick, a stomach bug or the flu. She ended up being out for about 2-3 weeks and was sick as a dog during that time.
When she came back we re-assessed where she was and lone behold she lost about 12 pounds.
Great, you hit your goal! How do you feel?
Awful.
Of course you do, you lost the weight you so badly wanted to lose but like we discussed, weight is not the full story. Just because you lost 12 pounds doesn’t mean you will feel great, strong, empowered, or even healthy.
She felt much better before she got sick, 12 pounds heavier and even said she looked better than when the weight came off.
If we dug a bit deeper into her goals they were not weight related. They were about changing how her body looks and feels. And these things can change drastically without the weight moving much at all.
The stigma of losing weight is one of the worst drivers you can lead with. But it’s easy, if I lose weight, everything else falls into place. In most cases the opposite is true.
If you focus on your overall health, your weight will fall into place.
Focus on the things that really matter, everything else will fall into place.
In good health,
Jeff
