Confidence is a desired trait. We look at confident people in a positive light and in some cases wishing we had the same belief in ourself.
That belief can have a positive impact on just about everything— work, sports, even personal achievements. But confidence is not just a thought process, it has to have merit behind It.
Kobe wasn’t just confident for shits and giggles. He put in hours and hours of HARD work which built the belief he had in himself and his game.
I talked briefly about this at our nutrition seminar, but the impact of self-efficacy is greater than you think.
Your belief in yourself is STRONG.
This will be one of the big factors when It comes to your own health and fitness, how much do you believe in yourself to change and execute new behaviors?
Things are hard enough, and if you doubt yourself along the way, things will be just that much harder.
Here are 3 Steps to Self Efficacy
Reasonable Goals:
You can make huge goals for yourself. Shoot for the damn stars and ignore all the hate.
But along the way you have to take steps to get to those goals.
So if you are hopping off the couch for the first time in 5 years, your first goal shouldn’t be to run 5 miles every single day.
I know for myself, goal setting is a huge aspect to how much self efficacy I have to achieve something.
Last year I set out to lose some body fat for the summer. If I made a goal to only eat chicken and rice and to exercise 7 days a week, I would have no belief in myself to reach those goals. Because I know what I can handle and that just isn’t It.
They are too far off what I am capable of handling, even if I stretch myself pretty far. But this is why reasonable goals are a huge piece to the puzzle, set things up for you to not only succeed but to BELIEVE you can succeed.
Purpose & Meaning:
The second piece to creating an environment for self efficacy is having true meaning and purpose behind your actions/goals.
Ask yourself WHY more and more.
Find the real reason you want to achieve something. Usually we don’t want to lose weight just to look better.
The meaning is deeper. How deep? That’s for you to uncover.
Work:
The third and final piece to self efficacy will be the work you put in.
This is a revolving wheel.
The more work you put in, the closer you will get to your goals. The closer you get to your goals, the more confidence you will have in yourself to achieve what you set out to do.
We want that belief in ourself to build and build the farther down the line we get.
The hard work is the proof that you believe in yourself to get to your goal.
Don’t skip self efficacy when It comes to the things you want to achieve. Goal setting, meaning, and hard work can help drive that self belief as far as you want to take It.
In good health,
Jeff
