You have a goal right?
How often do you see true progress toward that goal? Do you get discouraged if there is no change every single day? Probably not. Now, after a few weeks you still aren’t seeing the change you had hoped to see at that point, is It time to get discouraged now?
Let’s say the goal is weight loss, you haven’t lost weight every day or even every week. What about after a month of this weight loss journey and you haven’t lost much weight at all, was all that work a complete waste of time?
For most people that’s not the case. It’s not always about your direct goal that will indicate your success, especially day to day. There are other things that can show your progress away from that one measure. I like to call these indicator measures.
In other words, your 3 KEYS.
Your 3 keys will be the indicators of success away from your specific end goal. Let’s take weight loss for example again. Away from just your overall weight, what are some other indicators that you are on the right track?
Clothes are fitting better
You are feeling better
You are building strength in the gym
So now if I look at the past month and I haven’t lost any weight, how are things looking on my 3 keys? If all 3 of them are doing great then I know I am still on the right track.
These keys can also help us make sure we aren’t regressing. Maybe you didn’t lose any weight this month but also your clothes are snug, you aren’t feeling great, and there hasn’t been much strength improvement in the gym. Now it’s time to take a step back and reevaluate what is going on and what your next steps can be.
Your single goal is not always the end all be all. I love having the people I work with pick out 3-4 other indicators that will give us a better idea of how their progress is really going.
So what are your 3 Keys? Take your overall goal and think of 3 things that would be indicators that you are moving in the right direction. Write them down and at the end of each month go back and see how things are progressing.
In good health,
Jeff
