I had a conversation with someone yesterday about why their workouts seemed a little easier than normal.
For this person, they have their regular job and come to the gym 4 days per week. We do push ourselves pretty hard during our sessions and have seen so much progress when It comes to strength, movement, and body composition.
She recently has started back up at school. Long days of class, studying, and exams have been taking up just about every ounce of her time and energy. On top of that she is still working and hasn’t missed a single workout these past few months.
Something has to give.
Every single thing you do has some effect. She was working very hard in the gym and working full time. Now, we add in all these hours of school, it’s impossible to give 100% effort to every single one of these things.
Think of everything you do as filling up a cup of water. The more you do, the closer to the top that water gets. Eventually, if you do too much that water is going to overflow.
For her, she is filling that cup up FAST. So what do we do? We have to adjust her workouts to have a little less water being added to her cup.
She isn’t going to take a step back with school, and there is an obligation to get to work each week. The workouts on the other hand are moldable, we can adapt things to fit whatever life events are happening.
This is why being aware of not only what you are doing but also how you are handling things is so important.
The moral of the story is, find what fills up your cup the most. It’s a balancing act but the goal is to keep all the water secure in that cup (and using a lid is cheating!)
In good health,
Jeff
