The Hardest Part Isn’t Starting

The first step toward a new goal is never easy.

It feels hard because it’s a change. Moving from somewhere you are right now to something that requires time and effort.

Even though starting is hard, there is something we don’t really bring up…

When you start, people notice. They cheer you on. They tell you how excited they are for you. And when you finally hit the milestone, people are there to celebrate the win.

People are always happy to support the beginning and the end of those journeys. It’s like someone getting their dream job — a big party to celebrate earning the new position, and another big party when It comes time to move on.

But almost no one talks about what happens in the middle.

It’s the time where the excitement wears off. Where motivation alone is no longer the driver.  It’s where there’s no audience watching your daily effort and no applause for doing what you said you’d do.

This middle portion, that’s the process.

And when you zoom out on the timeline, it’s where the majority of the journey actually happens.

That time in the middle is the deciding factor of the progress you are going to make. All the little decisions that you make every single day that will either bring you one step closer or one step farther from your goals.

Whether you:

  • Trained today
  • Drank enough water
  • Followed your food plans
  • Slept enough
  • G0t out and moved your body

This is the time when people really need the support but rarely ever get It.

No one is watching. No one is cheering you on. No one is there to make the decision for you.

And that’s exactly why this time in the process is the hardest part.

It monotonous. It can feel lonely. It can feel discouraging. It can feel like you’re putting in effort without getting much back.

This is where most people quit, It’s the place where the work you do everyday doesn’t lead to an immediate result. It’s also the place where roadblocks will inevitably show up.

Progress isn’t always clear and It doesn’t show itself in ways we want.

Your effort today doesn’t always show up tomorrow, but all the things you did WILL add up to progress in the future.

Every workout completed. Every great meal chosen. Every walk taken. Every time you didn’t stop.

All of it builds off one another.

Do things need to be perfect? No.

It just needs to be done often…more often than not.

Progress comes from stacking more positive days than negative ones.

We need to understand the process and what It takes to battle through It.

It’s not about overcoming it, but more about finding ways to keep coming back for more every single day even when It doesn’t always seem like you want to.

You started this journey for a reason.

Learn to value the days that don’t feel exciting. Learn to trust the process. Because the process isn’t wasted time, it’s the work that gets you where you want to be.

And if you stay in it long enough, you’ll even start to enjoy it.

That is where true progress is made and lasting results are found!

In good health,

Jeff
